Summary
The Lapps, or Sami, of Helgeland in central Norway are economically dependent upon their herds of reindeer. When the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded in April 1986, a cloud of radioactive particles laid heavy deposits over the traditional grazing lands of the Sami. One year later, the high absorption of radioactivity by the reindeer has caused their meat and hides to be too contaminated for human consumption, threatening the continuation of the traditional way of life in the area
