- The desire for lush, beautiful land and the discovery of gold ended seventy years of peace between the white man and the Nez Perce Indians. Ordered from their ancestral homeland to the confines of a reservation, Chief Joseph led his people on an arduous journey in a desperate, but ultimately vain, attempt to remain free by seeking sanctuary in Canada. Although apprehended and forced to surrender, almost in sight of their goal, the spirit, dignity and skill that characterized their struggle won the Nez Perce many supporters, even among white communities. Their struggle to defend their ancient homeland remains one of the most outstanding in American history
